Permanent jewellery, your questions answered, Breaking Hearts Jewels Bolton

Permanent Jewellery, Your Questions Answered

Every week someone messages us the same few questions before they book their first piece of permanent jewellery. Does it hurt, how long does it last, what happens if it breaks. So here are the answers, all in one place, from our studio in Bolton.

Does permanent jewellery hurt?

No. You don't feel a thing. The welder makes a tiny spark on the chain, not on you, and it is over in a second. Honestly, people don't feel anything at all.

How does it work?

Four steps. Choose your chain, choose your charm, get custom fitted, spark welded. The chain is fitted on you, sitting exactly where you want it, and then welded shut. No clasp, nothing to take off.

How long does the appointment take?

We allow about 45 minutes per person. The weld itself takes seconds. Choosing your chain is the part that takes the time, and it is the best part, so we never rush you.

How do I know it will fit?

Because it is fitted on you, not measured from a chart. We wrap the chain round your wrist, ankle or neck, you tell us how snug or loose you like it, and we weld it there. A bracelet moves with you. An anklet gets a little more room, because ankles swell through the day.

How long does it last?

Years, if you look after it. You can shower in it, sleep in it, swim in it and live your life in it. Give it a rinse after chlorine or salt water and it will stay bright.

One thing to know: permanent jewellery is meant to break if it gets caught on something and there is too much pressure on it. That is on purpose, so it gives way before it hurts you.

What happens if it breaks?

If your permanent bracelet breaks, you can bring it back to Breaking Hearts Jewels and we will reweld it for you. Keep the chain and bring it with you. Rewelds are free, at the studio or at one of our markets if we have a gap between fittings, and most take a couple of minutes.

Can I take it off?

Yes, any time. Find the little round jump ring next to the weld and snip it with nail clippers or scissors. Keep the chain and we can weld it back on whenever you like.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the chain you choose. Starting prices by type are on the booking page, and we tell you the exact total before we weld. A small deposit holds your appointment and comes off what you pay on the day. No surprises.

Which chain should I pick?

We have over 260 chains in gold, silver and rose gold, from fine and dainty to chunky and bold. If you have no idea where to start, try our which chain are you quiz, then come and try your match on in real life.

Can I bring someone with me?

Please do. The studio takes up to six people at a time, so book together with your mum, your sister, your best friend or your whole group. Matching bracelets are a big thing here.

What about memorial jewellery?

We make memorial jewellery with ashes, hair or fur, in front of you, at the studio or on a home visit if the stairs are hard for you. If this is what you are looking for, our memorial jewellery page has everything you need to know.
